Judge: Lily Kuonen

Lily Kuonen is Associate Professor of Art at Jacksonville University in Florida. She holds an MFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. She has exhibited her work on 3 continents, 4 countries, and over 20 U.S. states, and has been an artist in residence at multiple locations nationally and internationally. She writes critical arts reviews for Burnaway Magazine based out of Atlanta, and she is also an Associate Editor for publications FATE in Review and FutureForward. Recently, she has been collaborating on large scale public art projects with her partner, Prof. Jim Benedict. She is influenced by her relationship to place, both in the geographic sense, but also in the awareness of a current time and culture, as a kind of place. Kuonen is a southern artist, making art in the south, with hopes to continue adding to the ever-changing identity of this region.

Judge’s Statement

The St. Augustine Art Association Honors Show is a rich show full of variety in approach to the subject matter, content, material use, style, and composition. The works selected for awards represent distinction within this broad variety, along with selecting works that represent the range of media. It is clear they represent dexterity with their chosen material, and they find expression within their style. The honorable mention awards present experimentation and levity, two valuable qualities. The named awards (Alice Alger, Ted Karam, and Emmett Fritz awards) also indicate a strong sense of material expression and depiction of form. As we are finding our footing in these unprecedented times, it is important to celebrate our creativity and expression, which help us maintain our sense of humanity and find ways to connect to those around us. This exhibition is a reminder of the complex ways we interpret our environment, find joy, generate hope, celebrate differences, hone our crafts, and add to the fabric of creativity. I would like to express my thanks to the St. Augustine Art Association for organizing this exhibition and inviting me to jury.
