“As I walked along a very small section fo Flagler Beach (a very clean beach) I started to notice more and more pieces of plastic, styrofoam, rope, straws and other miscellaneous stuff. This is a tiny sample of what I picked up in about 10 minutes on December 30, 2020. It makes up the ‘side dishes’ for my felted blue fish dinner on a platter. Remember… the catch of the day is not always what you want to eat!”

“A surprise gift of blue crabs started a series of paintings. This Panel had many layers of paint before a sketch of charcoal defined the chef, pot and crab. As detail was added, more objects were needed to complete the scene, and create the story. A pot of water started to bubble, then froth, and lastly steam. The steam rises from the pot, crab and spoon. The flames started small and began licking the sides of the pot and blackening the copper. The fish head originally began as butter, sizzling on a cast black skillet. But less attention on the skillet was needed, so the addition of the fish covered over more of the black surface, allowing a secondary focus to the overall theme.

Imagine… The battle is going to ensue, with a boiling pot and open flames between chef and crab. Will the crabs reflections throw him off? The spoon becomes a sword, and the pot lid becomes a shield. A meal trying to sneak away… reminding me of ‘Jim Henson Muppets’ on Friday nights in the 80’s. I was inspired and captives by the artistry he created every week. The Swedish Chef was always attacked by the ingredients, and never got to finish his recipes. In this case the Cajun Chef may not be able to finish either. Who will win the battle?”

“For me working on a board with many layers of paint and colors adds to the finished piece. Bringing the background forward with scraping, sanding, glazing and clear coats. I love the contradictions, a hint of Rembrandt in the moody lighting, layers of glazing and suggestions of aged detail, then shrimp, synchronized, boiling in a copper pot with sausage and peppercorns. Butter, Parsley and lemon for the finishing touches. Now if they just finish their routine, dinner can start.

So often we overlook the humor in art, and yet it is a fundamental part of our human nature. During Covid it has been enjoyable creating art that encourages light hearted humor. I hope to finish this series in 2021, making 4 pieces in total.”

“This work of art is another recipe from French cuisine in this series. It just felt wrong cooking this poor fellow in a pie, so, I thought I would let him escape, much to the horror of the guest. He’s armed himself, with fork and spoon, while holding up the pie plate. Just like he used to do, picking up large clams from the ocean floor. (Great You Tube video, by the way). The arms and head have many tones of red and purple since they change color when stressed, so harmonizing them with glaze helped to keep all the parts united, easily recognized visually as one animal. The techniques I use with acrylic come a background with oil. Many times I paint in acrylic, I find the challenge in working with this medium enjoyable, pushing the paint as far as I can go before it dries.”

“One of my family’s favorite activities when I was young was fishing.  The red and white bobber moving up and down and around was a welcomed sight.  A sandwich must always have a pickle.  The brown trout, although not t indigenous to Florida, was photographed in North Dakota.  The baguette is indigenous to Publix.  If you look closely, you can see a red and white tablecloth in the deep.  Do you like to fish or have fond memories of fishing or just enjoy fish sandwiches?”

“The William Tell Overture was used as the theme song to the Lone Ranger TVseries.  Almost every child is familiar with this racing tune as well as with Pinocchio.  The European wooden Pinocchio doll was a favorite play with my children.  William Tell is a Swedish hero who symbolizes national pride and strength.  He is best known for shooting an arrow through an apple atop his son’s head.  He was ordered to do so by the Hapsburg emperor for his defiance of Austrian rule over Sweden.”
