Abstracted Portraits
Workshop with Paula Pascucci
Friday, January 24 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
at the St. Augustine Art Association
Push the boundaries of traditional portraiture in this one-day workshop!
Join Paula Pascucci as she demonstrates how to analyze the face as a harmonious interplay of shapes and values. Using your phone or tablet, you’ll discover how to accurately break down a reference image, and then recreate it shape-by-shape on a substrate. Experiment with distortion, and try painting with vibrant, expressive colors — emphasizing the use of unconventional skin tones. The portrait you produce in this workshop can be entered into the next month’s Faces & Figures show!
About the Instructor
St. Augustine based artist Paula Pascucci has been honing her skills in mixed media collage for several years. Originally a pastel artist, she used layered and juxtaposed pastel strokes to achieve color variations. This experience proved helpful with mono-printing collage papers as pattern and color variations are the key to useful papers.
Her collage work is a combination of mixed media, mono-printed papers, and found ephemera that she tears into “brushstrokes” to achieve a painterly appearance. Her style is nuanced by a range of inspirations including coastal Florida.
A native of Massachusetts, she received a degree in fine art at the Art Institute of Boston. After a career in project management, she focused her attention on an art career.
Paula has won numerous awards and her work is included in many private and public collections throughout the eastern coast of the country. Her work is on local display at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery and the St. Augustine Art Association.
