Basic Elements of Painting
Workshop with Martha Ferguson
September 14 – 16 | 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
at the St. Augustine Art Association

Learn the basic elements of painting with Martha Ferguson!
Martha is a local artist who you can often find painting en plein air around town. She studied fine art at Flagler College and after meeting local legend, Emmett Fritz, found herself heavily influenced by his work. “My inspiration comes from the familiar subjects that surround me. I love to paint the scenes of old gritty towns, capturing the feel of the area and the locals that walk the quaint streets. I am often drawn to architecture and the way the light comes through the subject. I want my paintings to be more than a likeness but an experience or a nostalgic feel.”
Locally, Martha’s work is shown in Butterfield Garage and the Grand Bohemian Gallery, and she also enters — and has won many awards in — STAAA exhibits.
In this 3-day workshop at the St. Augustine Art Association, students will learn different approaches to starting a painting, they’ll learn how to determine composition and focal points, notans and color palettes. Martha will teach underpainting techniques, blocking in with shapes, and finally, adding details and final touches.
