The History of the Beaux Arts Ball
“Whenever there are people concerned with the fine arts, the Beaux-arts Ball is a medium which brings them together for a gala and festive occasion and to further the projects in which they are all interested.”
The St. Augustine Art Association was founded on January 18, 1924, to promote the arts in St. Augustine. As the organization grew, it became evident they needed their own building. In 1945, the organization purchased the land at 22 Marine Street in historic downtown, from member and past president Hildegard Müller-Uri’s parents. To raise the funds for a building, the board of the Art Association put on the Beaux Arts Ball, which Otto Lightner generously hosted for a number of years at his museum–the old Alcazar Hotel. In February 1954, the St. Augustine Art Association opened its own gallery space–the building that is now the Main Gallery.
