Call for Art: History Through the Lens of Architecture

July 18 - August 25, 2024

The history of St. Augustine is visible everywhere you look, and is evident by the buildings, waterways, and landmarks. This exhibit will challenge both professionals and amateurs to observe their own communities and tell a story of how their local architecture plays a part in the development of the culture and people of their community.

Judging for awards will be done in-person once the show is installed.  Photographers are eligible to win awards in the following categories:

Eligibility

  • Artists 18 or older who live in the 51 United States may submit their photographs to this exhibit.
  • Photographers must be able to print, mat and frame, and deliver/pickup or ship their photographs to/from the St. Augustine Art Association gallery located at 22 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084.
  • Photographers may submit images in one of two categories: Professional and Amateur.

Photographers who make at least 75% of their living income with their photography.

Photographers who make less than 50% of their living income with their photography.

General Rules

Below are the general rules for the exhibit, History Through the Lens of Architecture. The St. Augustine Art Association may update them between now and the exhibit, and is under no obligation to inform you of changes. Check the website frequently to stay informed.   • Entries submitted without payment will not be accepted.
  • More than three (3) entries by one (1) photographer will not be accepted, and refunds will not be given.
  • Entry fees are nonrefundable, regardless of acceptance or rejection.
  • Maximum print size is 20 inches by 30 inches.
  • Submitted photos may be color or black and white.
  • Subject Matter:
  • How does architecture tell the story of a place? How does it shape a way of life, influence daily life, create the aesthetic of a place?
  • Architectural structures (exterior and interior of buildings, arches, bridges, tunnels, towers, lighthouses, etc.)
  • Elements of life, landscape, and other technology are permissible as long as an architectural structure is the main focus of the photograph.
  • Only simple editing is permissible.
  • Submitted Photographs may NOT have: Creative Digital Enhancement, including AI generated images or elements, super imposed or added imagery, unnatural color changes, creative filters (ex. Poster edges, Watercolor, Paint Daubs, etc.), illustrations or collages.
  • Photographs will be juried into the final exhibit from the digital images submitted. Judging for awards will take place after the exhibition has been installed in the gallery. Judges’ decisions are final.
  • Black Frames ONLY.
  • White mats only. Matting may not exceed a four (4) inch border around image.
  • Hanging wire secured on the back.
  • No saw-tooth hangers.
  • Art Glass or Plexiglass ONLY. NO non-glare glass.

* For ease of printing and framing, Imagine Fine Art Printing,
a local printer in St. Augustine will provide printing and framing services. 

Delivery & Pickup

Photographers must have their work to the gallery and ready to hang by 4:30pm on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. Artwork may be hand-delivered or shipped. See below for details.

  • Shipped photographs will incur a $40 handling fee per box. This fee includes unpacking, package storage during exhibit, repacking in same materials and delivery arrangement. Photographers who ship their work are responsible for providing the St. Augustine Art Association with a return label for USPS or UPS. Photographs that are shipped must arrive to the gallery (22 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084) no later than 4:30pm on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
  • PHOTOGRAPHS LEFT AFTER 60 DAYS FROM EXHIBIT END DATE WILL BE CONSIDERED AN UNRESTRICTED DONATION. ARTISTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TIMELINESS IN ARTWORK DELIVERY AND RETRIEVAL.
  • PHOTOGRAPHS MUST BE LEFT ON DISPLAY FOR THE DURATION OF THE EXHIBIT.
  • Sold Photographs will incur a 40% commission, so price your photos to sell with that in mind. NFS (not for sale) is permissible, but POR (price on request) is not. Photographs listed as NFS will not be available for sale. Art sales checks are sent out via USPS after the conclusion of the exhibit.

Application

The online application opens on Monday, February 5, 2024, and will close on May 10, 2024, 11:59pm. Photographers are responsible for correctly entering information into the application, formatting and sizing their photographs properly, and remaining in the know for all aspects of the exhibit. By entering online, applicants agree to the St. Augustine Art Association’s website terms of service and privacy policy.

A submitted application is considered an agreement between the photographer and the St. Augustine Art Association to participate in the exhibit, History Through the Lens of Architecture, held at the St. Augustine Art Association (22 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084) from July 18 – August 25, 2024, should their photograph(s) be selected for inclusion. Applicants understand that not every piece entered will be accepted, and entry fee refunds will not be given. Applicants agree to abide by the rules and guidelines for the exhibit.

Photographs will be used for publicity in print and digital media, and credit to photographer will be given. Photos will be taken at exhibit events and may be used for publicity in print and digital media.

  • Complete the online entry form.
  • Make sure all information is entered correctly.
  • Upload up to three high quality images (jpg, jpeg, png, pdf; max size 5MB).
  • Files MUST BE FORMATTED in the following way: LastName_FirstName-Title.fileextension
  • File names may not have special characters (commas, apostrophes, semi colons or colons, etc. ONLY DASHES and LETTERS or NUMBERS or SPACES.
  • Pay the nonrefundable entry fee ($35/photograph).
  • If entry was submitted successfuly, you will receive an automated email with confirmation. CHECK YOUR SPAM OR JUNK FOLDER if you do not receive it.
  • If you do not receive a confirmation email, contact the St. Augustine Art Association before entering again: info@staaa.org or (904) 824-2310.
