Call for Art:
History Through the Lens of the Artist
July 18 - August 25, 2024
Works must be entered online by Sunday, June 16th. Walk-in entries will NOT be accepted for this exhibit.
The history of a place is visible everywhere you look, and can be evident by the buildings, waterways, and landmarks, and more. This exhibit challenges artists to observe their surroundings and tell a story of of the development and evolution of the culture and people of a community from its inception until today.
Artists may submit works that utilize subject matter ranging from architecture and landscape, to people, events, landmarks, social issues and more.

Judging for awards will be done in-person once the show is installed. Applicants are eligible to win awards in the following categories:

Eligibility
- Artists must be 18 years of age or older.
- Artists must be able to hand-deliver and pick up their photographs by the dates listed below to/from the St. Augustine Art Association gallery located at 22 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084.
- Artists may submit up to three (3) pieces* in one (1) of the following categories:
- Drawing & Painting
- Printmaking
- Mixed Media & Collage (2D or 3D)
- Fiber
- Sculpture
- Pottery & Ceramics
*Artwork may have been in an STAAA show before.
General Rules
Below are the general rules for the exhibit, History Through the Lens of the Artist. The St. Augustine Art Association may update information regarding events and opportunities for the exhibit between now and July 18, 2024. We will do our best to keep accepted artists informed of updates and opportunities, but encourage all artists to check the website frequently to stay informed. - Entries submitted without payment will not be accepted.
- More than three (3) works entered by one (1) artists will not be considered for acceptance, and refunds will not be given.
- Entry fees are nonrefundable, regardless of acceptance or rejection.

Why Can’t I Look Like Them?

- Subject Matter:
- The subject matter should represent something historical, and it does not have to be exclusive to St. Augustine. It can be from anywhere in the world. Things to consider including are:
- Architecture
- Landmarks and iconic structures
- People & portraits (the average person or a notable figure)
- Stories and historical or impactful events
- Social issues
- Artists MAY submit work that has been previously exhibited at STAAA, and there is no timeframe on when it has to have been done. Artwork must be original and done by the entering artist.
- INELIGIBLE WORK: copies or prints of an original piece; plagiarism (Do NOT submit work based off another work of art or published photo — no exceptions); work created by anyone other than the entering artist; work that does not meet the size and presentation standards.
- Presentation
- Canvases with edges less than 1.5 inches thick MUST BE FRAMED.
- Unframed canvases 1.5 inch thick or more, must have finished edges – no tape, fraying, dirt, paint smudges or spilling over edge.
- Artwork must be dry
- Hanging wire secured on the back.
- No saw-tooth or nail hole hangers.
- Art Glass or Plexiglass ONLY. NO non-glare glass.
- 2D Maximum Size including frame: 36 inches on any side
- 3D Maximum Size: 36 inches high x 24 inches wide. Free-standing may be no larger than 60 inches high and 36 inches wide.
Delivery & Pickup
Artists must have their work to the gallery and ready to install by 4:00pm on Sunday, July 14, 2024. In-person drop offs and pick ups may be done on the following dates:

- ARTWORK LEFT AFTER 60 DAYS FROM EXHIBIT END DATE WILL BE CONSIDERED AN UNRESTRICTED DONATION. ARTISTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUNCTUALITY IN ARTWORK DELIVERY AND RETRIEVAL.
- ARTWORK MUST BE LEFT ON DISPLAY FOR THE DURATION OF THE EXHIBIT.
- Sold art will incur a 40% commission, so price your art to sell with that in mind. NFS (not for sale) is permissible, but POR (price on request) is not. Artwork listed as NFS will not be available for sale. Art sales checks are sent out via USPS after the conclusion of the exhibit.
- Photographs of artwork will be used for publicity in print and digital media, and credit to artist will be given. Photos will be taken at exhibit events and may be used for publicity in print and digital media. Artist retains copyrights to their images. Reproductions will not be made by STAAA for any purposes other than publicity.
Application
The online application opens on Monday, May 13, 2024, and will close on June 16, 2024, 11:59pm. Artists are responsible for correctly entering information into the application, formatting and sizing their photographs properly, and remaining in the know for all aspects of the exhibit. By entering online, applicants agree to the St. Augustine Art Association’s website terms of service and privacy policy.
A submitted application is considered an agreement between the artist and the St. Augustine Art Association to participate in the exhibit, History Through the Lens of the Artist, held at the St. Augustine Art Association (22 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084) from July 18 – August 25, 2024, should their artwork(s) be selected for inclusion. Applicants understand that not every piece entered may be accepted, and entry fee refunds will not be given. Applicants agree to abide by the rules and guidelines for the exhibit. Applicants certify that the artwork(s) they are submitting have been done by the submitting artist, that the artwork meets the requirements for the exhibit listed in this prospectus, and that the submitting artist owns the copyright on their image(s).
Applicant understands that photographs of artwork will be used for publicity in print and digital media, and credit to artist will be given. Photos will be taken at exhibit events and may be used for publicity in print and digital media. Artist retains copyrights to their art. Reproductions will not be made by STAAA for any purposes other than publicity.
- How to Apply
- Complete the online entry form.
- Make sure all information is entered correctly.
- Upload up to three high quality images (jpg, jpeg, png, pdf; max size 5MB).
- Uploaded images may not have special characters (commas, apostrophes, semi colons or colons, etc. ONLY DASHES and LETTERS or NUMBERS or SPACES.
- Files MUST BE FORMATTED in the following way: LastName_FirstName-Title.fileextension
- Pay the nonrefundable entry fee ($35/piece).
- If entry was submitted successfully, you will receive an automated email with confirmation. CHECK YOUR SPAM OR JUNK FOLDER if you do not receive it. Confirm with STAAA BEFORE resubmitting, as double entries will be a disqualification and refunds will not be given.
- All communication will be done via email.
