Harold S. Maddocks’ oil painting of Spuds represents a small potato-farming community west of Saint Augustine, Florida. The artist was a landscape and seascape painter who worked in the conservative Impressionist style.

Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Maddocks was educated at the Massachusetts Normal School in Boston. Maddocks was an active member of both the Rockport Art Association and the Saint Augustine Arts Club. The artist offered weekly outdoor sketch classes at the Arts Club (now known as the Saint Augustine Art Association).
