  • Lights On at Dusk

Oil on Linen Panel by Abby Howard Murphy (15in. x 18in.)
"This 1874 faceted Fresnel "LENS" was replaced temporarily in 1990s by an airport beacon; however a tower of sorts has been here to warn ships or protect citizens since early Spanish watchtowers in 16th century enlarged by the British in the 18th century when the first "Light" was established. In the painting, forced perspective overlaps the modern Light's service buildings illuminating the way to the past - just as they turn on- much as a lens creates intensity across the entire beam of light. A plein air nocturne in situ. More history: staugustinelighthouse.org./get-involved/about-mission-uvp/history"

  • River City Nocturne 3 (from Cowford to River Taxi)

Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas by Abby Howard Murphy (24in. x 20in.)
"Until 1822, "Cow Ford" was where cattle might easily cross the St Johns River and is still the oldest continuously operating seaport in the U.S. first as a center for cotton, indigo and rice. But now Jacksonville prides itself as the "bold new city of the South" and the largest city in the continental U.S. boasting "Seven Bridges" as well as a water taxi. It's dramatic skyline now iconic."
