  • Papua New Guinea Boy with Pet Green Tree Python

Mixed Media by Darline Braz ⏤ 24 in x 24 in, Framed
"I took a photo in Alotau, Papua New Guinea, of a teenage boy dressed in native costume with his pet Green Tree Python draped around his neck. I asked him where he got it & he said, "I caught it." "How did you catch it?", I asked. I was astonished when he replied, "I caught it with my hands." He didn't look happy dressed as he was with his pet as the main attraction."

  • Baining Fire Dance II

Mixed Media by Darline Braz ⏤ 40 in x 36 in, Framed
"This painting was inspired by photos I took at a Baining Fire Dance on Rambaul in Papua New Guinea. Fire dances are carried out for many reasons. Originally a dance would celebrate a birth, mark a new harvest, remember the recently deceased or be done for initiation purposes. Such an event may feature upwards of 30 masks, each acted by men who take turns parading through a designated dance ground. An important part of the ceremony is an orchestra of men playing a variety of percussion instruments. As the tempo of the music increases over time, thetwo smaller varieties, the masked dancers leap through the fire. The images on the masks which are made of pounded bark are said to represent the forest spirits. The air is filled with the sounds of the percussion instruments & lots of smoke."
