Layered Cut-Paper and Chalk Pastel by Jay Cabrera
(9.5 in. x 10 in.)
"As an artist and art educator, I have a relatively broad perspective on life. I see the world like Nicholas Bourriaud’s (2002) description of relational aesthetics and random materialism. Bourriaud argues that art is the materialization of form. Form, according to Bourriaud, is “a lasting encounter” (p.19) that is comprised of several interconnected layers of previous encounters, like a building up of paint on a canvas. Similarly, I see the world as a build-up of experiences and encounters; each person contributing to the ever-materializing artwork we call life. With ideas like this in mind, I search for ways to capture the essence of interconnected layers building upon each other by creating art using layers. My art uses layers of paper cut in a meticulous way to expose the stratification of those layers of paper to create works of art. This particular piece captures my wife's beauty using both warm and cool colors."
