  • The Illusion of Presence

Acrylic (with Graphite) by Laura Dill (16.25in. x 19.25in.)
"Trauma, a persistent shadow, can be amplified by life's unexpected storms. Amid a harrowing ordeal, I found myself adrift in a world stripped of safety. Words, once my anchors, failed me, as terror consumed me. Retreating inward, disconnecting - a familiar yet destructive coping mechanism, became my refuge. Amidst this darkness, I discovered a sanctuary by immersing myself in painting. I journeyed from illusion to presence with each stroke, despair to enlightenment. This ethereal piece is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience, a garden that requires tending to flourish. A fresh palette and brush became my sunshine, illuminating a path forward. This piece is part of my “Resilience Project”, a series of artworks and writings exploring sexual violence, gun violence, PTSD, and resilience. Every painting is a conversation with the canvas, my closest confidant and reflection of my soul. “When the words are too painful, I swallow them with paint. When the words will not come, images emerge like excited utterances refusing to be denied.” – Laura Dill, from her poem “Melancholy Zinger” Other works in the series include her essay “Audacious”, painting “She, in the Limelight”, and art plus painting diptychs “Hidden Scars”, “Resilience”, “Melancholy Zinger”, and “Red Lipstick”, etc... “Illusion” is an ethereal acrylic painting in soft blues with touches of graphite on gessoed heavy cotton paper, sealed with varnish. It is presented under glass in a wide elegantly curved contemporary gilded wood frame."
