Fell for the Ruse

Polymer clay, acrylics, wood by Shelby Clark
(11in. x 14in.)
**NOT FOR SALE**

Much of my work explores the relationship between land and sea and I tend to depict this unification as a tense one, whether through the individual forms or in the ways in which my characters interact with one another.

In “Fell for the Ruse,” both the fox and the wolf are grasping a human heart, with their tails intertwining beneath. Where the fox’s arm is loosely placed, however, the wolf’s arm is clinging onto the heart. Similarly, the fox’s head is uplifted while the wolf’s is tucked into its neck, with keen eyes fixed on the unconcerned fox. In this, the viewer is nearly omniscient, as they are able to witness a moment “before” realization or confrontation. In some sense, we know the fox’s fate before the fox does. My goal for this sculpture was to take a snapshot that represents something unspoken, as well as “matters of the heart” quite literally.”
