Fiber- Felt by Liz Canali
(12 in. x 28 in.)

“Abstract art exists through patterns, colors, texture and line without the need for an external motivation. Realistic art consists of art that aims to replicate nature such as Photography. When these two elements combine to create an abstract impression of real life, you get abstract realism.” – Santa Clara Arts

I’ve been fascinated with combining abstract backgrounds with realistic foregrounds that depict the nature surrounding me. The birds, especially the giant blue herons, inspired “LEAVING”. I used merino wool, silk and bamboo roving and the techniques of wet and needle felting to create my impression of a heron getting ready to leave … the food, the nest, the party … and take flight for the next great adventure.

This piece is mounted on hard insulation foam with adhesive tabs so they can be easily hung. It has insulating and sound proofing qualities. Wool is insulating, moisture absorbing and hard wearing. On top of all this, nature has been so brilliant that it has greased each fiber of the wool with lanolin as it grows out of the follicle. The lanolin protects the fiber against water, dirt and odors. If it does need to be cleaned, a dry fluffy rag should be enough or a computer vacuum works well too.”
