Living Fiel y Firme

$650.00

Alpaca Wool Fibers through Mixed Media Paper by Laura Towne
(29.5 in. x 23.5 in.)

Saint Augustine is a vibrant city with a robust and fascinating history. The Bridge of Lions, completed in 1927, and found in the center of this charming town, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is well known to all who visit. A pair of copies of the marble Medici lions, “Fiel y Firme “, stand guard at the West end of the bridge adjacent to the town square. These majestic creatures are carved from stone and are fixed firmly to the earth. The town of Saint Augustine, however, is full of life and movement. This led me to choose to depict this scene with organic and simple materials. Alpaca wool fibers were selected for their plasticity, texture, and natural tones to suggest a living entity on the two-dimensional surface. Unlike highly manufactured materials and pigments, these “living” fibers encourage a more direct, visceral connection with the viewer, drawing attention to the vital nature of Saint Augustine.
