Man on Penny Farthing

Pencil by Chad Turner
⏤ 11 in x 14 in, Framed

“TThis drawing is a departure from my typical work but I hadn’t drawn for some time and wanted a challenge as I worked to rebuild my drawing “chops”. That said, I was also drawn to this image because I imagine that this was a hopeful and joyous time for the country now that the Civil War had ended with much excitement about liberty and the future. In the few decades to follow there would be an explosion in modern day tech. Commercially available light bulbs, the telephone, flight, the freedom to travel even greater distances with the first Model T, etc. I think it’s safe to say that from the late 19th century to early 20th century was a time when everything changed for the better of humanity. The Penny Farthing is a historical relic from our past — a symbol of freedom and like so many things should never be forgotten, torn down or deleted or we are doomed to repeat it.”
