  • Terribly Tasting Tentacles for Turtles

Mixed Media by Libby Heineken (16in. x 40in.)
"I volunteered with a local sea “Turtle Patrol” for years - marking turtle nests, gathering field data, and reporting hatch results. Sea turtles are such magnificent creatures it is shame that all seven species are endangered. All sea turtles eat jellyfish, but the Leatherbacks eat them almost exclusively and they eat A LOT of them! They actually help control jellyfish populations. Unfortunately, the string, ribbon, latex (rubber) and Mylar (plastic) from balloons can look like a jellyfish with tentacles under water to a sea turtle - with disastrous results. As part of local advocacy efforts, I illustrated a children’s book, The Blue Balloon, with local scenes to help explain this danger to children. And I’m very pleased that Florida enacted legislation this year making it unlawful to intentionally release balloons."
